The Akathist Hymn to the Mother of God, one of the most famous in the Christian liturgy, was composed in 626 in Byzantium, capital of the Eastern Empire, under siege at the time by the Persians. The people, standing on the ramparts, sang this song of praise to the Virgin throughout the night, and the city was miraculously delivered.
